JAEGERS VS. ZORDS
Although separated by nearly two decades, there are some striking similarities between Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim and the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangersseries. To start off, the robots. Del Toro's giant mechincal fighting machines are called Jaegers, and take humanoid form, while the Power Rangers relied on animal-shaped Zords. As mighty and morphin as they were, the Zords would prove no match for Pac Rim's lethal machines.
BURN GORMAN VS. ALPHA 5
As the feeble, quavering, English-accented lackeys confined moreover to the HQ while their pals head out into the fire, both human scientist Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) and robot pal Alpha 5 (a pile of recycled tin) are severely under appreciated. But while Gorman might be in cahoots with staving off global scale monster attacks, Alpha 5 once helped a lost kid find his mom in a park. Winner.
CHARLIE DAY VS. BILLY, THE BLUE RANGEREvery superhero team needs the member with know-how — the scientifically inclined, technologically adept, astigmatism-afflicted brains who helps his or her cohorts out of many a perplexing jam. David Yost stood strong for nerd pride back in his Power Ranging days as Blue Ranger Billy Cranston, but Charlie Day does wonders for the species with his own special level of badass madness. Wild card always wins.
CHARLIE HUNNAM VS. JASON, THE RED RANGER
The ace. The charmer. The head pilot. The good guy. The looks. PR has Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Becket, and PR (hey, look at that! Another similarity!) has Austin St. John as Jason Lee Scott, the Red Ranger. Despite his youth, we have to give the edge to the three named JLS here. While Raleigh is plagued with PTSD and a nasty temper, Jason is dutifully well-mannered through and through.
RINKO KIKUCHI VS. TRINI, THE YELLOW RANGER
It's not racist! Yes, we suppose we could have chosen Pink Ranger Kimberly to compete with Pacific Rim star Rinko Kikuchi, but both her character Mako and Yellow Ranger Trini face the oppressive hand of their masters who wish to keep them out of the way of battle. The difference is that Rinko rises to the occasion, while Trini portrayer Thuy Trang fell victim to contract disputes. As such, Pac Rim takes the round, and we maintain cultural sensitivity!
KAIJU VS. GOLDAR
On the evil side of things, del Toro has the kaiju, a race of interdimensional monsters with a knack for property damage. The Power Rangers have their own set of nefarious creations, such as Goldar, who, to his credit, withstood a much longer legacy than any of Pac Rim's brutish seafarers. Point goes to Goldar!
IDRIS ELBA VS. ZORDON
The godlike leader of the bunch who strikes fear into the hearts of his friends and enemies alike. Yes, Zordon is actually a superhuman force with omnipotence unparalleled, but Idris Elba is... he's Idris freakin' Elba, man. Can we call this one a tie?
RON PERLMAN VS. BULK
The one shortcoming that Ron Perlman, playing Pacific Rim's black market tycoon Hannibal Chau, has is that he lacks a Skull. I mean, he has plenty of skulls (many of which are kaiju skulls, in fact), but not a dufus sidekick named Skull, like the Power Rangers comic relief bully Farkas Bulkmeier had in Eugene Skullovich. Sorry, Paul Schrier... wherever you are... but Perlman's legendarily named character takes this one, cementing Pacific Rim as the victor over all.Charlie Hunnam Actor
